This is a very minor issue for most, but it was one I couldn't bear.a few months ago I started downloading various AV trials like BitDefender, F-Secure, Avira, etc. My computer is dead-silent except the video card when playing games, so the persistent 7KB/s writes in Norton were audible. Admittedly I have not tried Eset/NOD32, but it's oft praised for being lightweight and well-appointed.

I still prefer Nod32 the best and always will.Īs far as free goes you cant beat MSE. Its considered much lighter on resources now. It's free and offers an advanced firewall, HIPS and cloud protection. So yeah, you can't go wrong with Norton, but I personally use Comodo Internet Security. And while it is free, it really only works off of a virus definitions database rather than heuristics and other more advanced ways to prevent zero-day infections. This post is especially ironic because while MS Security Essentials is okay overall, it is more resource heavy than a lot of thirdy party products, including Norton. There are two features that Norton does better than the rest: It checks for new virus definitions way more frequently than the competition and has a huge customer base for their Community Watch / Insight service. Norton's memory footprint is also ~12MB total for the two spawned processes. My only complaint about Norton really is it persistently writes ~7KB/s.not a lot but it is always doing it. As of right now Norton AV is among the best in terms of resource usage.along with Comodo, Eset, Panda and a few others. If you're not I can't help you.Norton AV used to be a tremendous resource hog, but not since their "2009" product when they completely revamped the engine/daemon.

If you are behind a NAT and SPI Firewall all you need is Microsoft Security Essentials if u are a Windows user. If you say/think Norton is a resource hog, please provide some evidence backing this up. Sortofageek, I am not directing this at you, rather to everybody else reading this. Why do I keep seeing people post over and over how Norton is such a resource hog, yet nobody every provides any proof other than "that's what I was told by so-and-so".? Just wanted to point out that compared to Google Chrome, the Norton A/V is a miser when it comes to using memory. As a matter of fact, just comparing memory usage between the Norton app from Comcast and Google Chrome browser.Įleven instances of chrome.exe (why so many for only one open window?) I have it running on three different machines and there are no indications of it being a system hog. Some Norton products were, many years ago, but not now.
